For 50 years JRI Orthopaedics has been working with orthopaedic surgeons, academics and researchers to deliver groundbreaking innovation and clinical excellence in orthopaedics. Mr Furlong was the pioneer of uncemented hip implants, a disruptive innovation of its time that has subsequently benefited the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the world.
Our 50th anniversary is an important milestone and offers a golden opportunity to not only celebrate our unique story and award-winning achievements, but also to share some of the hugely exciting plans we have for the future!
JRI Orthopaedics was initially founded by Ronald Furlong to introduce the Müller cemented hip to the UK market. JRI was expanded in 1977 with the addition of its own manufacturing plant sited in Sheffield in the heart of the British steel cutting industry. This expansion provided capacity for added design facility through to manufacture and marketing of the entire product range.
From the start, JRI has been committed to attracting and working with the best people to deliver the best solutions in joint reconstruction, repair and regeneration.
In 1985, JRI became the first company in the world to produce an uncemented hip implant with a Hydroxyapatite coating that enabled a biological bond to be formed with the patient’s own bone. This together with an implant that was biomechanically designed created the real prospect of a hip implant for life. This product won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Technical Achievement in 1993.
The Furlong H-A.C coated hip stem was a significant innovation in joint replacement. Since its first implantation, over 250,000 patients have benefited from this product and, to this day, it has possibly the lowest revision rate at 10 years recorded on the National Joint Registry (NJR).
In 2007, JRI moved within Sheffield to a 5,500sqm state-of-the-art, purpose-designed manufacturing facility. Building on its strong design heritage JRI Orthopaedics continued to innovate; designing, developing and manufacturing award-winning high quality products including the VAIOS Shoulder System, Furlong Evolution and Securus Revision Hip System.
Until March, 2018, JRI was owned by the charitable organisation Orthopeadic Research UK and JRI gift aided over £12 million to help fund clinician education and further research into orthopaedics for the common good. An unrivalled level of donations of which we are enormously proud.
We are now part of AK Medical Group, China’s leading joint replacement company and one of the world’s largest 3D-printed orthopaedic implant manufacturers.
JRI and AK Medical brands continue and the combination of the two businesses, that has created a larger and stronger Group, will now bring evermore innovative products to the global market and improve the quality of life for millions of patients worldwide.
