Some of the biggest names in the international orthopaedic community will be speaking at the inaugural Pathways Conference being held in London in October.

The independent, scientific meeting aims to explore and discuss technologies in Hip Arthroplasty that offer improved patient outcomes.

Through a mixture of didactic lectures, interactive debates and specialised break-out groups, the conference looked at a range of issues around the current use and performance of uncemented hip stems.

JRI Orthopaedics was proud to be the major sponsor of what organisers hope will be a bi-annual meeting. Speakers and delegates got together to explore solutions to further improve clinical outcomes and innovations in implant design, biological fixation and different surgical approaches to optimize recovery before producing a Conference Agreement of Aims.

In 1985, JRI Orthopaedics was the first company in the world to produce a hip implant with a Hydroxyapatite (HAC) coating enabling a biological bond with the patient’s bone and so the prospect of a hip for life.

The JRI Furlong HAC stem is still one of the leading uncemented hips on the UK market with a 13A* rating from ODEP. Its next generation uncemented hip replacement system, the Furlong Evolution, was launched in 2012 and has just received an ODEP 5A* rating – the highest award after five years of impressive clinical evidence.

Jerry Agass, Chief Executive of the Sheffield-based company, said: “We are genuinely passionate about uncemented hips and delighted have been involved and sponsoring this independent, scientific meeting which has attracted some of the biggest names in the orthopaedic community.

“We know just how good the results are for uncemented hip replacements over time but there is a perception, that cemented stems and cups are better value.

“So, this meeting was an exciting opportunity to look at who should be having uncemented hips and when, innovations in uncemented stem design, whether the coatings be improved to prevent infection and the best surgical approaches and rehabilitation regime to further improve outcomes.”

Speakers at the Uncemented Hips Conference were leading surgeons and researchers from the UK and, internationally from Barcelona to Bejiing.

These included convenor Johan Witt, Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at University College Hospitals, London and ProfGunnar Flivik, an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at Lund University, Sweden, who has written over 40 articles and is actively engaged in the study of Revision Hip Arthroplasty.
